Pol Vans is not only a painter, but an art project as a whole. It goes beyond the final object to question the relation between the individual and his artistic expressions.
Vans was born as the alter ego of another artist who remains anonymous (for now...). This performative gesture aims to consider how the artist as an individual relates to his own production. Is it possible to disassociate the piece from its author's subjectivity? Can someone create meaningful artwork from a fictional self?
Literature has always embraced this kind of investigation, building heteronyms to explore the multiple dimensions of the ego as an expressive engine. How can painting also open this option? Pol Vans chooses the language of abstraction, color, and a certain reference to the unconscious.
Abstraction plays an open field in this kind of experimentation. It allows an intuitive and almost automatic painting that takes the form of the mind's flux of images. As the Surrealists did in their literary works, Vans lets his unconscious generate material without going through the ego's filter. This way, he tries to create without the burdens of subjectivity, which comes along with oppressive social norms.
The artist's identity will remain anonymous until he reaches his desired results. Maybe in ten or fifteen years, he'll uncover his real name and publish the personal outcomes of this thrilling experience.
