Remo Michael Farruggio
Canal In The Night

n.d.

About the Item

The restrained use of color in this undated painting likely from the mid-1950s demonstrates Farruggio’s mastery of contrast, dimension, and perspective. The work is rendered figurative only by its title (Canal in the Night), engaging the viewer in its realization. Sicilian-American painter Remo Farruggio was among the best-credentialed artists of the twentieth century in any setting. Farruggio studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City, at the Beaux-Arts Institute in Paris, again in New York at the School of Industrial Art before becoming a Works Progress Administration artist in the late 1930s, a rare federal honor for a visual artist. His work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Galeria Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City, among others.
