About the Item
"I Believe I Can Fly" is a five-panel painting done on canvas with acrylic paint by Indian artist Ritu Sinha.
From the artist: "This artwork is about the missing lyrical sounds of a small town or village. I believe mostly we all have our roots in a small town or a village. For the enterprising lifestyle, for bread and butter, or maybe some other reason, most of us shifted or settled in metros. Somehow the lyrical sounds were lost, and the noise of vehicles and other chores took place. In this artwork, I add a purpose to balance the nature of sound and noise in our life. I think people of all age groups relate spontaneously to my balancing act of managing the lyrical sound Ie. Our dreams and the noise, i.e., pushing our self to achieve our dreams."
Ritu Sinha is an Indian artist located in New Delhi, India. She was a Luxembourg Art Prize Finalist in 2018 and exhibited several of her work in “My First Day in the World,” which this work is part of. This series consists of several multi-panel works, and all are concerned with India's personal history and social injustice issues. This piece specifically discusses the tragic death of an Indian mother in Ireland. Ireland had a strict abortion ban, and in the late stages of this woman's pregnancy, she encountered a pregnancy complication that would kill her if she did not abort the baby. Ireland refused to allow the abortion, and both baby and mother died, causing an uproar in both Ireland and India. Ireland lifted the ban shortly after the tragic event.

Artist Statement: Through my paintings, I talk about my personal stories and contemporary human
situations affected by political decisions, especially on children and women. I treat them as something to overcome and to communicate with other people. My creative process is a link between conscious and subconscious experiences. Work on paper involves an ongoing process of making and expressing. It is through putting down, cutting, pasting, colouring, manipulating, adding, layering, leaving the paper empty or drawing running stitch to create a final work of art. Usually I like to work on the waste papers which are of unusual sizes and accordingly I incorporate sequin and thread in my art which give the wings to my thoughts, as I believe that people who are the sailors of such circumstances are like thread, they can be streamed in any direction. My paintings are multi-paneled as it is the reflection of my own identity, as I have experienced my life in sections. Ritu has works collected in European museums, private collections in the States, France and India. Her work can be seen annually at LA Art Show in Gallery 1202's works on paper booth, and she had a two-person show in 2020 that featured her series, My First Day in This World.
