Dimensions Without Frame: H 37 in. x W 34.5 in. Artist Biography: Born October 13, 1933, Jefferson Island, Louisiana, Robert Gordy was known for his complex acrylic paintings which featured patterning and repetition, and linear shapes in a flat pictorial space in closely-keyed colors. In the early 1980s, the human head began to emerge as an important element in his paintings and in a series of monotypes created in Santa Fe. Robert Gordy’s death in 1986 at the age of 52 was an enormous loss. Gordy possessed extraordinary compositional skills and a marvelously imaginative intelligence. His elegant paintings done in his signature style through 1981 evidence a mastery, particularly over hue and value of color and keeping dynamics of shape in varied balance. Even in this austere period there were often intense emotional realities beneath his paintings’ apparent calm. Beginning in 1982 his work was clearly about more than mastery of color and design as profound emotional messages surfaced in Robert Gordy’s superb series of monotypes done at the end of his life.

  • Doledrum ( Industrial Environmental Pollution
    Located in Miami, FL
Out of many come one. A huge back mountain is formed out of scores of gas spewing smokestacks. The foreboding back mass fills most of the pictorial area. As one gets closer to the canvas, the complexity of the mass if revealed in low on contrast as we see the diverse variety of the stacks with accompanying petrochemical architecture. Above the stacks, plums of air pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides rise gracefully into the atmosphere. The artist focuses less on the by-product of the stacks and more on his giant pollution machine that he has so astutely rendered. The work is mostly monochromatic but the artist has indicted a red tonality of a sunset/sunrise that offsets the charcoal blacks and grays. ______________________________________________ Submitted by Tamarind Institute Ian Davis...
