Willem Got His, Acrylic Abstract Painting on Leather, 2019

2019

About the Item

Artist Commentary: In February of 2013, I was driving around Pasadena, CA. I went down a small street and came face to face with a painted garage door. Whatever images had been painted on it had been exposed to the time and the elements causing the paint to chip, peel and crack. The colors, the way the paint had been applied and the overall composition reminded me of Willem de Kooning pieces I was familiar with. I’ve referred to those colors and weathered textures to create this piece. So Willem got his and I got mine. Keywords: abstract, gestural, animated, woven Artist Biography: I was born in Mexico City in 1957 and moved to Los Angeles in 1984. I'm told that when I was just born and laying in one of those bassinets in the hospital, my paternal grandparents came to see me and while looking through the window into the baby ward, my grandfather said to my dad: "give him a pen, he wants to write." In a way, my grandfather was right. I needed a pen indeed, but not really to write, but to draw. One of my earliest memories of connecting with the art world (around age four or five) is sitting in a corner in my mom's art class with a bunch of colored chalk just scribbling away. From then on, I traded the chalk for anything that could make a mark on a surface. I have filled scrapbooks with notes and ideas, have studied art history, and relish every opportunity to see and learn what other artists are doing. As a teenager I started taking photographs and used them as inspiration for drawings, paintings, and mixed media works. For the last 50 years I have dedicated myself to a process of exploration and discovery, and it has been an enriching and rewarding experience.
