Sandra Cohen
"Vault", abstract, figure, landscape, yellow, orange, pink, acrylic painting

2016

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “Vault” is a 30 x 21 inch acrylic painting on thick archival paper, painted in tones of yellow, orange, pink, brown, red, and white. A female figure leaps from an abstract landscape and is partially obscured by the sky. Circular shapes pulsate in orbit as the air seems to grasp the woman from above. This piece unframed and signed on the bottom. An ascending (or descending) woman is a motif repeated in many of Cohen’s works, which often feature images and concepts that can be parsed backwards, forwards, or mirrored. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
