About the Item
"Moon Shadow" in the "Celeste and Sea" collection is an original painting by San Diego Artist Shima Shanti in the ancient art form of Encaustic. Up to 50 layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's aesthetic is minimal. Combined with all-natural earth elements and earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity. Beeswax is one of nature's best preservatives impervious to moisture, decay and UV light. The unique beauty of Encaustic painting is imperfection. There are bubbles, ripples and markings on the smooth-textured, high-gloss surface.
