About the Item
"Purplescent" in the "Lay of the Land" collection is inspired by the meeting place of land and sea where earth and water merge; the fleeting moment between time and space where one gives way to the other. Her inspiration is borne from growing up in the abundance of water and the endless big sky of Montana. Shima paints vision of Peace revealing what lies beyond appearance free of the confines of perception. "Purplescent" is an original painting by San Diego Artist Shima Shanti in the ancient art form of Encaustic. Up to 50 layers of purified beeswax mixed with all-natural earth pigments and a fir-tree sap called damar resin are painted on Russian Baltic birch panel then fused with the flame of a torch. Shima's aesthetic is minimal. Combined with all-natural earth elements and earth-tone palette unexpected levels of complexity surface in this simplicity. Shima holds a special reverence for the quality materials and unseen details in the complex and labor-intensive encaustic process that is a quiet whisper to the understated, refined luxury of her paintings.
Beeswax is one of nature's best preservatives impervious to moisture, decay and UV light. The unique beauty of Encaustic is imperfection. There are bubbles, ripples and markings on the smooth-textured, high-gloss surface.
