About the Item

Clean and modern in it’s design and imagery, yet rich and luscious in the surfaces and texture, there is much more to meet the eye with these contemporary minimalist paintings made from venetian plaster and pigment by artist Shira Toren. The large green painting is inspired by Toren’s fascination with cacti and desert plants since her childhood. The bottom of the painting reveals a band of cerulean blue, a bridge to a connected element in her series of Ocean paintings. This painting has plenty of surface interest and surprise little excavations that reveal the many layers that constructed this work. The almost monochromatic approach lends itself to an abstracted landscape that compliments just about any space from the traditional modern home to the organic, mid-century, and coastal. Shira Toren’s work is perfect for any modern home, from the more eclectic to minimal, her paintings' surfaces and textures add a rich and elegant look to any space. Artist Statement: "My work is to make unconscious emotion visceral. I implement a process-oriented approach in my practice, which uncovers the works' themes as much as establishes them. I apply Venetian plaster, graphite powder and mineral pigments, accumulating these materials to achieve a nuanced sense of texture. Layers of material converge in abstract monochrome forms, creating a luminal space where pigments build and collapse. The various built surfaces in my work seemingly excavate elusive memories and their very nature. The final compositions embody this subtle conflict: a latent tension lingering between presence and absence, the rigid and the malleable." Born in Tel-Aviv, she moved to New York City to study fine art and design. Toren received her BFA from the Pratt Institute and An Associate Degree in Art Therapy from The New School. She Attended classes in Painting and Printmaking at The Art Students League, NYC. Her work explores personal and global themes that reflect upon the environment. The Abstract Monochromatic paintings are process oriented. Using an eclectic method, uniquely developed by Toren, she rubs graphite powder, pigments and ink on to Venetian plaster substrates. Ms. Toren is currently working at her studios in Brooklyn, Toren’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationally and internationally.
