About the Item
Sophie Crichton is an abstract painter from Toronto (b. 1993), currently living and working in Barcelona. Her works are a visual manifestation of her experience, her interaction with urban environments, and an awareness of urban pop culture.
Working with mixed media, Crichton creates expansive abstracted canvases that incorporate the residue of everyday life into shifting scenes. Embracing the line between accident and intent, she approaches her work with an intuitive raw energy characterised by expressive mark making, graphic line work and bold colours. Her works adopt an offbeat aesthetic through the use of both frenetic and refined mark making. She takes inspiration from seemingly banal encounters, the everyday unrest of her urban environment, and liminal spaces - where the transient nature of things leave their mark, creating a patina of debris and stimuli. Crichton is interested in what happens in the margins of everyday life.
Wandering through cities, she searches for moments and memories, experiences and stories which she later relays into her abstract canvases, forming the bedrock of her paintings.
Crichton manifests her experience on canvas, evident as she applies and takes away through layered surfaces. The works are imbued with her collection of subconscious data, moments and memories; fragments of conversations, the patina of cities, the process of decay and renewal - memories of tangled wires, graffiti, a faded neon sign.
The works echos the physicality of the city, as under paintings are revealed through scraped and scratched away surfaces. Unknowable references and insinuations of colour, form and texture extracted from her urban environment litter the scene.
The artist has developed a gestural vocabulary in which each line and colour is infused with energy and meaning. She freely - scribbles, scratches and stains her canvases. Bursts of playful power, turmoil and disorder are created with erratic, anarchic marks.
These scratching moments are paired with meditative movements and washes in an artful dance. The layered gestures mark the evidence of a happening - the passing of a moment, like stamps or declarations of something having taken place. Symbol-like shapes and gestures act as an abstracted visual language like hieroglyphics tugging at the subconscious. Sometimes almost familiar symbolism or iconography could be noticed, only to disappear into the layers and shapes of lines and marks. This duality of control and chaos are a nod to the contradictions and confusion of contemporary living.
