- Lake Chelan No. 17 / oil on panel - 42 x 60 inchesBy Betty Jo CostanzoLocated in Burlingame, CAAbstract Impressionist water and sky painting with a minimal, clean feel that is awash with warm and cool tones. Betty Jo Costanzo immerses herself in coastal settings, taking in all of her senses: sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. She records — via video and audio tape — crashing waves and light, which she later plays in her studio while she paints not only the appearance of water and sky, but the essence of her experience and time spent in the natural setting. Betty Jo Costanzo’s award-winning art has been described as “getting lost with a purpose” and “what a place would be like if you belonged there.” She says her influences range from John Cage to film director Alain Resnais, with the late and great Jay Defeo, her longtime mentor and friend, continuing to be the most significant. Her works are held in corporate, private and public collections around the world and her public exhibitions and residencies span four decades both regionally and internationally. Though she has lived on both coasts of the United States and in São Paulo, Brazil, and has worked and taught around the world, including England, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Cyprus, the former associate professor at California College of the Arts now maintains a full-time studio practice based in Seattle, Washington.
