Call and Response

About the Item

Call and Response: Like most of my work, my paintings are painted “ alla prima”. “alla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), direct painting or au premier coup,[1] is a painting technique in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. Used mostly in oil painting, the technique requires a fast way of working, because the work has to be finished before the first layers have dried. I relish the level of risk and excitement inherent in ‘alla prima’ painting. Once a mark is laid down, that mark insists that I work with it, so each mark becomes a commitment, and each subsequent mark must respond to the previous one. Although this method is exciting, it allows little opportunity to rethink or revise. I must be willing to take what is given. The paint remains lively and active. It challenges me every step of the way. I arrive at titles after the painting is complete. I aim to suggest an entry into the painting without prejudicing the viewer’s own interpretation. “In music, call and response is a succession of two distinct pases usually written in different parts of the music, where the second phrase is heard as a direct commentary on or in response to the first. This can take form as commentary to a statement, an answer to a question or repetition of a phrase following or slightly overlapping the initial speaker(s).[1] It corresponds to the call and response pattern in human communication and is found as a basic element of musical form, such as verse-chorus form, in many traditions. I titled this painting “Call and Response” because the upper and lower halves of the painting were created as a ‘back and forth’ motion…I worked on the upper part, then responded by further developing the lower half. As a result, the two halves have a rhythmic back and forth relationship that resembles the ‘call and response’ in musical composition.

In James' paintings, he explores how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding. How harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form. In his abstract paintings he responds to these phenomena by creating contemporary icons – works meant to encourage contemplation and meditation. James' more recent works have evolved from the romantic representational ideal into the symbolic, abstract archetype. He comes from a classical background inspired by the great romantic landscape painters such as Turner, Lorrain, Friedrich and Moran, his recent work is more influenced by the work of artists like Klee, Miro, Rothko, Pollock, Riley and Richter. James creates complex abstractions layered in familiarity and veiled in mysteriousness. The unorthodox methods he uses to apply and move oil paint allow him to create compositions that are formally beautiful – infused with tension and drama but also expressive of the spiritual, symbolic, mysterious and eternal. James' work counters...

Grey & Tan Abstract Expressionist Textural Mid-Century Abstract by Peter Witwer Heavily textured, expressive composition by Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). Over the top of a heavy base layer of plaster, Witwer has added various layers of oil paint, creating a massive amount of depth and texture. Sections of red peek out from underneath various shades of tan, grey, and black. Spots of blue and purple are used sparingly, hidden in the composition. Presented in a wood frame. Canvas size: 20"H x 40"W Frame size: 26.63"H x 46.63"W Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Born George Peter...

  • Everything is Early (Colorful Autumn colors Large Abstract Oil painting, Nature)
    By Richmond Burton
    Located in Cody, WY
Richmond Burton’s works are known for their kaleidoscopic color, undulating patterns, and lyrical handling of expressionistic mark making. His Visceral, seductive, and organic compositions play with decorative patterning without compromising a conceptual backbone. Their intensity of vision allows for transcendent thought, experience, and connection while challenging any preconceived norms or rules defining abstract painting. “Structure is never absent; it’s just uninsistent, even accidental. The paintings are built up in stages, but never give the impression of being hard-worked. They have a fluid, textural presence, like luxury fabrics printed with overlapping, off-register layers of patterning.” — Holland Cotter, The New York Times (1999). Richmond Burton (b. 1960, Talladega, AL) obtained a BA in architecture from Rice University Houston, TX (1984). He lives and works in Woodstock, NY. Burton has shown extensively both domestically and internationally and has work in the collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; The Broad, Los Angeles, CA; Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX; Fogg Museum at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, NY; and National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, among others. Recent solo exhibitions include venues such as Sarah Moody Gallery of Art at University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL (2015); Silas Marder Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY (2014); Philip Slein Gallery, St. Louis, MO (2013); and George Lawson...
