Todd Horton
Ranging Far and Wide with the Moon as her Guide

About the Item

Todd Horton lives and paints full time on Samish Island, Washington. His work involves landscape and wildlife with elements of chance that play between realism and abstraction. His work was recently featured in Seattles' Davidson Gallery "Exceptional" show and awarded a "Merit of Excellence" from a PONCHO Art Auction. Horton's paintings were also featured at the Museum of Northwest Art group exhibition "Wild/Life" and in a solo exhibition at Whatcom Museum in 2007 titled "Love, Murder, Magic". His paintings have been largely influenced from time living abroad in Berlin and Japan. Horton's process of creating/destroying merge to create a magical poetical realism that is once enigmatic and literal, opening the possibility of symbolic meanings. Yet the paintings are most importantly inviting and "beautiful", making us more sensitive to the world around us.

My paintings are the primary way in which I try to understand the complexities of the region where I live. Most of my work is built on themes of human perception, the boundaries and possibilities of our senses, and the importance of individual and collective memory in shaping cultural imagery and aesthetics of place. I like to use common Western imagery and symbolism to create conceptual works that are Western in aesthetic but employ themes that are widely applicable to the American experience. I feel compelled as an artist to express how this absolutely one-of-a-kind place has the ability to profoundly impact all those who exist within it, whether we are aware of it or not. - Luke Anderson
