'Still Life with Strings', Italian School (circa 1940s)

circa 1940s

About the Item

'Still Life with Strings', ink and pencil on paper, from the Italian School of artists (circa 1940s). This gallery acquired this artwork with two similar works for which this one may be a study or sketch for another. Surely there is inspiration from Juan Gris (1887-1927) and Georges Braque's (1882-1963) cubist style, not to mention the clear influence of the work of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). This is more evident in this work's related paintings mentioned above. Discovered in North Central Italy, although its exact origins are uncertain, this charming work depicts a stringed instrument called a mandola in Italian (related to a lute). There is also a vase, among other things. The artist seems to have chosen to leave the final work 'unfinished'. Many of the words seen in various places in the sketch refer to colours in Italian (and perhaps Spanish or Portuguese but uncertain), as if to provide direction regarding how the various items should be painted. Or, is the artist simply asking the viewer to imagine those colours in the unfinished parts? Like the other works, it is a piece with vitality and flair while at the same time revealing its characterful, vintage history. The art's mysterious origins add to its attractiveness and desirability. It is in good overall condition with a new frame and precious, non-reflective glass. The work shows some minor fading commensurate with age. Upon request, a video will be provided. Unsigned by the artist. Please enquire on this platform if all three artworks are desired as a triptych. Dimensions with frame: H 60 cm / 23.6" W 44 cm / 17.3" Dimensions without frame: H 46.5 cm / 18.3" W 31.5 cm / 12.4"

  • Carali McCall, Work no. 1 (Circle Drawing) Gold/Red, 2hours 24minutes, 2018
    By Carali McCall
    Located in London, GB
'Work no. 1 (Circle Drawing), Gold/Red, 2hours 24minutes, 2018’ graphite on 315 gsm Heritage Fine Art Paper by Carali McCall (born 1981). McCall began her ‘Circle Drawing' artworks in 2004 where she focuses on the durational element and physical process of drawing. Using graphite on paper she draws her full arm's length in a continuous circular motion to the point of complete exhaustion. During this physically demanding process, her position and ability to extend the arm diminishes to the extent she can no longer hold the graphite. McCall quotes, 'an important aim is to maintain a constant and continuous visible line that embodies time and energy. While performing, painfully, my entire body is noticeably putting effort into the drawing.' This intense action and durational element often cause the paper to fatigue and rip, which is often identified as her distinctive trademark. In McCall’s new addition to the series, materials such as Gold and Gouache are used to treat the surface and bring another layer of reference to important art historical processes. The combination of these new materials and grand scale of this practice, make McCall’s work particularly striking. About Artist: Carali McCall is an emerging artist whose works are internationally recognised. A Canadian artist born in 1981, she is based in London, UK. McCall was awarded a PhD from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London, and her work is featured in the upcoming publication by Bloomsburg Publishing, 'Performance Drawing: New Practices since the 1960s'. A finalist in the 2017 Jerwood Drawing Prize, McCall’s work is currently touring the United Kingdom and is situated in private and public collections curated alongside artworks by Picasso and Damien Hirst. Other notable exhibitions include: Again and Again and Again: Serial Formats and Repetitive Actions, Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada, (2012), Kenny Schachter’s Rove Gallery, Hoxton Square, London (2008), Folkestone Fringe Festival (2014), Woolff Gallery, London UK (2017) and EMPIRE II...

'Work no. 1 (Circle Drawing), 1hour 30minutes, 2017’ graphite on paper by Carali McCall (born 1981). McCall began her ‘Circle Drawing' artworks in 2004, during her final year at art school in Toronto, Canada. Using graphite on paper she draws her full arm's length in a continuous circular motion to the point of complete exhaustion. McCall continues to focus on the durational element and physical process of drawing; however, her earlier works are rare as she now only performs for live audiences at certain events. During this physically demanding process, her position and ability to extend the arm diminishes to the extent she can no longer hold the graphite. McCall quotes, 'an important aim is to maintain a constant and continuous visible line that embodies time and energy.
