About the Item
Uwe Kowski examines his interactions with his environment in paintings that turn imagery and symbols from everyday life into vibrant abstract compositions. Probing the medium’s potential, Kowski often works instinctively, as in 13:51PM (2016), where he employs a broad color palette, and frees himself completely from painting’s imperative to represent the visible world. In works such as Kleine Gesellschaft (2018), Kowski manipulates line, form, and color to test the partition between figuration and abstraction; the painting’s title, which can translate to either “small company” or “a small party,” seems to allude to the varicolored contour lines which decorate its abstract background and resemble a group of human silhouettes. Before studying painting and graphics at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, Kowski worked as an apprentice to a sign painter. His work is now in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, and the Museum Junge Kunst in Frankfurt.
