Contemporary Acrylic Painting, Conceptual Art, 21st Century, Text, black, white, small canvas Valery Chtak "Dusk", 2019 Acrylic on canvas 30 x 40 cm Valery Chtak was born in Moscow in 1981, where he still lives and works. As far as Chtak can remember, he has always been an artist. However, it was not until the end of the 90's when Chtak found his black and white painting style, an artistic language that he continues to explore to this day. Around that time, Chtak spent time with some friends at the informal school of contemporary art, founded by Avdeï Ter-Oganyan. Between 2000 and 2005, he joined the Radek community, an artist association that was committed to organizing cutting-edge performances. These events were conducted by the artist Anatoly Osmolovsky and called “anti-spectacular” in reference to the French thinker Guy Debord. All the while, Chtak continued to work on his own series of solo projects. In 2007, he was part of the group exhibition Moscopolis, taking place in the Espace culturel Louis Vuitton in Paris. This show introduced a selection of artists, all who play a key role in the new contemporary art scene in Moscow. Valery is a nominee for the State Prize in the field of contemporary art "Innovation" in the nomination "New Generation" (project "Only Truth", 2011). The artist's works are held in the collections of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Vladimir Smirnov and Konstantin Sorokin Foundation, as well as in the private collections of Pierre Brochet, Andrei Tretyakov, Samir Sabe D’Acre and others. A technique Chtak uses all the time is the inclusion of text in his images. Any language is a way of conceptualising the world, and a tool for understanding it. The variety of languages and alphabets that exists in all of Chtak’s projects represents the diversity of worlds that we ourselves produce and in which we live, raising them to the rank of objective reality. Chtak works with the illusory nature of such attitudes in his art. Each of his projects is a multi-level fluctuating narrative where flashes of understanding are replaced by the failures of misunderstanding — starting at the linguistic level and continuing with the impossibility of rationally correlating the figurative image on the canvas with the words written on it, even when the language of this inscription is known to the viewer. ‘People ask me “What does this mean?” It doesn’t mean anything! Haven’t you heard: there are works of art with no particular meaning? They were created that way, so when you see the emptiness — in a picture, at an exhibition — you actually see the emptiness in yourself, in your head, and begin to understand it,’ Chtak says.
