About the Item
Ex collection Carolyn Dunlap Millet
Exhibited: Knoedler and Co, NY; Tibor de Nagy, Houston; Berry Campbell, NY
Walter Darby Bannard was a leading proponent of color field painting and was known for his refined minimalism. Later in his career, he complicated his work with polymers and gels that lent a topographic feeling to his work. The art critic Clement Greenberg was a big fan and included Bannard in his seminal "Post Painterly Abstraction Exhibition" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1964. His works can be found in the collections of the Baltimore Museum, Brooklyn Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Guggenheim, the Met, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney, among others.
