Yvonne Lammerich
Currents#1 - bold, colorful, contemporary, geometric abstract, acrylic on board

1985

About the Item

With its bold form and striking black palette, this large circular painting by Yvonne Lammerich makes a dramatic contemporary statement. The actual scale of the circle is related to the artist’s body—who created this image by extending her arms, paintbrush in hand and moving across the surface of the canvas. A close examination of this work reveals circles within circles emanating from a defined target. Lammerich is known for her innovative, interpretative abstracted work that has chartered a unique path on both the national and international art scene. One of a limited series. “Though neither painting is really only black or white, we will hold them in our mind as such, they address both the need and limits of definition.“ Yvonne Lammerich “…her pictorial space emanates from the body complex as multivalent emotive states linked by their common centre. She identifies this with the notion of the fold or folding as an unremitting flow of transparency and reflections of image into text and back again." James Campbell, Galerie Clara Maria Sels, Düsseldorf. Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and also received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.

  • Midnight Surprise - bold, colourful, abstract expressionist, acrylic on paper
    By Adam Cohen
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Hot pink and red intersects with drips and splashes of yellow, magenta and orange in this dynamic acrylic painting on paper. Beneath the energetic surface a scaffold of black completes the composition. Cohen intersects the language Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. This painting on paper is currently unframed. However, it can be mounted on panel and framed or framed behind glass. Adam Cohen, born in New Jersey in 1959, studied with artist Lilian Marzell, a friend of Willem de Kooning. Cohen earned his BFA at Philadelphia's Tyler School of Art at Temple University which included a year of painting in Rome. Returning to New York he studied at the School of Visual Arts, the Arts Students League and Parsons School of Design. Cohen has exhibited in Italy, Holland, New Jersey, New York and Ontario. His work is in numerous private collections. In 2015, he was awarded the International Art Prize Giuseppe Gambino...
