Suivant une composition subtilement géométrique, ce paysage portuaire s’organise autour de l’axe central d’un fanal marquant l’entrée du port. A sa base, le quai se déploie en angle droit, formant une pointe saillante dans la toile. De part et d’autres, sur la mer des embarcations aux mâts parallèles et d’un même jaune que le fanal, circulent selon un même axe diagonal. Enfin, à l’arrière-plan l’autre rive se déploie, dessinant aussi un angle qui marque l’entrée du port. Quai et rive opposée sont teintés d’un même ocre blond sur lesquels se répartissent hommes et tonneaux, au premier plan, maisons et collines, à l’arrière. Au centre, le bleu de la mer fait masse, contrastant avec le reste, par ses tonalités plus froides et son traitement plus dense. Grâce à l’équilibre de la complémentarité des couleurs, bleues et beiges, Marquet nous offre un paysage vivant. Jouant avec les effets de la perspective atmosphérique, il varie la densité des tons en fonction de leur éloignement. Ainsi les personnages orangés, dispersés sur le quai, s’estompent-ils au fur et à mesure. La mer, elle-même, brossée de vaguelettes bleu foncé à droite, s’éclaircit peu à peu avec la distance. Sa surface est même traversée de subtils passages de blancs pour en signifier la brillance dans les reflets du soleil. Coloriste subtil, à l’affût des effets de la lumière sur chaque élément, Marquet imprime à sa toile une atmosphère calme et sereine.
