André Cottavoz
Little Boy with Blond Hair

1955

About the Item

A charming and expressive depiction of youth done in a rare to find color palette. The thick paint and brushwork is exactly what Andre Cottavoz is collected for and this work is somewhat large scale for him. Done in the tradition of a Chaim Soutine or a Frank Auerbach, this is a great style of painting that grew out of the work that Vincent Van Gogh did. It is in a contemporary frame that has silvered leaf on the front face. The canvas measures 25.75 x 19.5 within the frame so the total dimensions listed are the framed dimensions.

  • Le Paysage, French scene
    By André Cottavoz
    Located in Greenwich, CT
Painted in 1961 in the south of France, Le Paysage's jewel tones and energetic, thick brushwork lure you into not a literal landscape of paint and asks you to discern it's true content. It has charm, expressiveness, abstracted content and idiosyncratic nature! A delight to hang in a smaller intimate spot. The framing is carefully done with silvered 24 karat leafing around the float area of the frame and then a wide panel to allow the viewer to focus in on the composition itself and the texture of the paint. Andre Cottavoz is very well noted artist of the French and Paris school of art...

Such small cottages would sit next to the large farmhouses and upon retirement the old couple would move into it, to make room for the next generation to take up residence in the main building and run the farm.
