About the Item
This fabulous Portrait of Andre Cottavoz's patron, Mark Rosenhaft is an expressive and memorable work. Everything about it is super - from the individualistic and quirky feel to the painting approach and fresh colors (greens and pinks) to the impastic paint application and character that comes leaping off the canvas in a genuine and affecting way.
It is in a specially designed, modern frame that has 18 karat leafing that is silvered and a combed gesso panel that all compliments the work.
Cottavoz is a Post Impressionist/modern artist who is sought after for his thick paint use, great subjects and expressive quality. He has an impressive bio, auction records and gallery representation.
This painting was done with a lot of thought as Cottavoz felt dearly toward this collector and friend!

André Cottavoz
Born in 1922 in Saint-Marcellin near the town of Grenoble in France, André Cottavoz was passionate about painting from an early age. Encouraged by his mother, an artist herself, Cottavoz entered the Fine Arts School in Lyon at the age of 18. Despite having been pressed into service during WWII, Cottavoz continued to paint and draw through the early 1940s. After the end of War he, along with Pierre Coquet a fellow student from Lyon, co-founded a group of painters who called themselves Noisme, or Sanzisme (without ism), also known as the Lyon School of New Figuration. Comprised of artists under the age of 30, their sole purpose was to paint “in the light” with no particular defining or restricting technique, rejecting all current artistic trends. In 1953 Cottavoz was awarded the Fénénon Prize by the University of Paris. Such a commendation served to boost his reputation. A close friendship of Japanese art dealer Kiyoshi Tamenaga, whom he met in 1957, opened doors to Japan for Cottavoz hosting exhibitions of his work at his gallery in Tokyo. He died in 2012.

Mexico-Curandero, Surrealist painting
Located in New York, NY
From 1952 until 1963 Forster resided in Mexico, a popular destination for Canadian artists. In Mexico City Forster became fully engaged in the art scene, becoming friendly with the great Mexican artists Diego Rivera and Rufino Tamayo who influenced Forster’s works. Forster placed special emphasis on the supremacy of color in works such as Mexico-Curandero. The floating or dancing forms in this picture bear a close resemblance to Tamayo’s works especially through the enveloping, deep, full, and impressive array of colors.
This is a marvelous work with a rich palette and a suggestiveness of a human form. It is not signed which is not unusual for the artist and it is a recorded work #FOR558A - from the Michael Forster...
