About the Item
3rd Version's (Ben Patterson) "Masks We Wear, to Transform" is a 2022 oil painting on cradled panel measuring 18 x 24 x 1.5 inches. The work is unframed but ready to hang. Centered against a stylized backdrop of dripping pink and green, a dark crow stands solemnly in grass, its head lowered beneath a soft, stitched helmet mask. A faint green tear drips from its eye, and above it, a graffiti-style crown is sprayed in loose lines—both regal and raw.
The work blends precision rendering with street-art energy. Patterson’s rich detail in the crow’s layered feathers contrasts with the flat graphic treatment of the background. The stenciled crown references both transformation and vulnerability, a nod to self-identity and dignity reclaimed. Subtle drips and textures hint at urban environments, while the pose and costume infuse the figure with introspection.
Part of Patterson’s "Masks We Wear" series, this painting invites the viewer to consider the ways in which we conceal, protect, or redefine ourselves. "To Transform" is a poignant, visually layered artwork that balances tenderness, symbolism, and edge.

Ben Patterson, working under the moniker 3rd Version, produces imaginative paintings that synthesize high realism with lowbrow illustration techniques from his Colorado studio. Born in Mesa, Arizona in 1982, Patterson developed his "highlow" approach to create cohesive works featuring meticulously rendered animals integrated with graphic, two-dimensional design elements. This method reflects his artistic philosophy centered on contradictions and unexpected juxtapositions. Patterson's career trajectory began with illustration-style characters addressing complex social concepts before shifting toward realistic animal subjects that examine environmental and social issues. At 27, he committed to full-time painting, guided by the principle that each artwork should influence the next creation. His 2022 achievements included producing 57 paintings, exhibiting in over 16 group shows spanning Los Angeles to Philadelphia, and completing a large-scale mural at Fiddler's Green in Colorado. His hand-painted surreal worlds are represented by select galleries across the United States including Abend Gallery.
