About the Item

Abraham Cooper R.A. (1787-1868) A greyhound in a landscape Oil on Panel Painting Size 12 x 15 in Framed Size 18 x 21 in Provenance The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. Abraham Cooper (1787–1868) was a British painter best known for his dynamic equestrian and battle scenes, capturing the energy of horses and military life with remarkable realism. Born in London, Cooper began his career in humble circumstances as a groom at a riding school, where his deep admiration for horses first took root. A self-taught artist, Cooper began painting animals in his spare time. His talent quickly drew attention, and with encouragement and perseverance, he rose through the art world. In 1816, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, and by 1820, he was elected a full member—an impressive achievement for someone with no formal training. Cooper specialized in scenes of cavalry charges, hunts, and historical battles, skillfully portraying both the drama of action and the anatomical accuracy of horses. His paintings were highly sought after by military patrons and aristocrats who valued both his technical skill and his spirited storytelling. Despite the growing popularity of new artistic styles in the mid-19th century, Cooper remained loyal to his realist, narrative approach. He continued painting until late in life, leaving behind a vivid record of Britain’s equestrian and military heritage.
