Artists Biography
The son of a stone-cutter, John Alfred Wheeler served for some time as a private in the 2nd Queens Corps. He became the first of a line of distinguished equestrian painters. In 1877 he left Bath and settled in Hanwell to be nearer his important London patrons. Apart from the occasional history painting, John Alfred Wheeler's specialised in painting riders mounted on their favourite horses and engaged in hunting or racing.
