Stunning modernist impasto painting of a goldfish with coral reminiscent of California Abstract Expressionist painter Joan Brown's early work. Circa 2000. Wonderful depth and texture added with underlying swirls of gesso prior to final painting. Unsigned. Unframed. Size: 24"H x 36"W.
Impasto is a thick, juicy, or lumpy and multi-layered application of paint, it is applied to canvas or other ground support. Emphasis is on texture and obvious paint strokes, as distinguished from a smooth, flat surface. Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh was noted for his Impasto technique. American artists that used Impasto include Joan Brown, Frank Duveneck, David Park, and Nicolai Fechin.
