Barbara Rae Norridge
Birds of a Spotted Feather – Dynamic Painting of Guinea Fowl

About the Item

Barbara Rae Norridge’s Birds of a Spotted Feather reflects the artist's deep understanding of ornithology, blending abstraction with realism to evoke both motion and harmony. Norridge depicts helmeted guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) - a highly social, ground-dwelling bird native to Africa, recognised for its distinctive spotted plumage, blue-grey head, and characteristic bony casque. The work showcases Norridge's ability to transform nature’s patterns into expressive, dynamic compositions. Barbara has been living in England since 1992, more precisely in Leicestershire, but has painted from her early days. She studied at the Johannesburg College of Art Foundation and has exhibited at the Lidchi’s Art Gallery, Johannesburg, gaining private and corporate commissions. Right from the start Barbara’ interest was with wildlife and the natural habitat and it became the driving force of her work. Having spent a large part of her life in Africa she drew her inspiration from its extensive game reserves, which she still visits from time to time. Her work mainly focuses on bird paintings where she incorporates either foliage, savannah or watery backgrounds, and also on atmospheric coastal paintings. These landscapes have an ethereal quality about them with diffused colours floating across the canvas through soft, flowing brushstrokes. Barbara’s love of birds, especially game birds and waders, have now become the main inspiration for her more recent work. Through her close observation she translates their idiosyncrasies whilst highlighting their beauty and frailty. Her compositions often depict groups of birds that seems to suggest that there is a sense of social gathering taking place. Barbara is passionate about the protection of our wetlands and deeply concerned for the decline in the numbers of songbirds and hopes to raise awareness through her work. Barbara is also the author of a series of successful children books featuring ‘Hilmy the Hippo’ and are also branching out into adult fiction with ‘The Apricot Tree’.
