About the Item

A work by Carlos Luna. "Match" is a contemporary Latin American artwork, gouache and charcoal on amate paper in a palette of reds and browns by Cuban artist Carlos Luna. Carlos Luna’s oeuvre is an amalgam of native Cuban influence from twentiethcentury artists such as Wifredo Lam, Mario Carreño, and Cundo Bermudez, among others, and the profound influence of Picasso’s and Gris’ Cubism and Leger’s futurist embrace of the machine age. Luna finds inspiration in the naïve and the provincial resulting in an individuation that melds Mexico’s penchant for the macabre and the primitive with the art of western academy and results in his inventive exploration of these culturally diverse artistic forces. Duality is a common theme in Cuban art, and Luna’s art embodies the internal struggles of an artist who has been uprooted. Part of the 1980’s artistic revolution in Cuba, Luna relocated to Puebla, Mexico and there enriched his unique style through the incorporation of Cuban icons with Mexican bravado of cultural practice and language, the storytelling of Mexcian muralism and even the horror vacui of the Latin American baroque. Luna approaches his paintings from the point of view of the conservator, almost as if restoring the discarded billboard or poster from a bygone era. Akin to a resurrection, Luna’s meticulous method involves building up layers of paint only to scrape them away, leaving them in an abraded state, then building up again in fresh layers that take on a much more refined and highly polished surface of painstaking detail, subtle modeling of form and brilliant colors. Luna’s gouaches demonstrate strength of composition and when merged with the vivid coloration he employs in his oil paintings, the artist’s achievements become even more effective and visually alluring.

  • Rosa Rugosa
    By Penelope Gottlieb
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A painting by Penelope Gottlieb. "Rosa Rugosa" is a contemporary mixed media work, acrylic and ink over an Audubon print by American, female artist Penelope Gottlieb. After receiving her BFA from the Art Center College for Design in Pasadena, Penelope Gottlieb went on to earn her MFA from the University of California in Santa Barbara where she currently lives and works. Gottlieb’s artistic repertoire is thoroughly modern and includes innovative paintings as well as compelling media design, for which she received an Emmy in the field of motion picture title design in 1993. Gottlieb’s more recent works showcase a unique synthesis of her modern graphic design background and the vintage botanical renderings of natural scientists. However, her paintings are also unique in their perspective on the traditional floral still life. Stylized flora and fauna are depicted as emanating from a comic book explosion, illustrating what the artist refers to as “the dire state of the planet” as faced with species extinction and the resulting biological and ecological ramifications. These violent representations of the artistically typified placid natural world are intended as “visual eulogies for lost plant life.” The particular specimens that Gottlieb depicts are in fact extinct and she is able to recreate them only from historical drawings and botanist’s descriptions. Although avant-garde and aesthetically unique, Gottlieb’s paintings delineate clear influences from the renowned artists of Pop and Expressionist art. The composition of many of her paintings is reminiscent of Kandinsky’s canvas-filling outpours while her bold color palette and black outlines recall Lichtenstein’s comic book panels. Her work is also closely related to a more contemporary group of artists, including Alexis Rockman...

  • Beautiful Water Color Painting on Recycled Books, Elephant Lovers
    By Arozarena De La Fuente
    Located in Mexico City, MX
The two artists and industrial designers, Ampi Arozarena and Elena De La Fuente describe form and color as their core of exploration. They admire the dual identity the two elements create in their works of art. They are driven by the optical and physical sensation materials become on their unique canvasses. Projected shadows upon their work are also an important factor, this effect is generated in these two works with a 3D abstract placement of the main elements. It´s unique and neutral colors are also very easy to combine in any surrounding. This outstanding book canvass is handmade from abandoned and rescued books in an old library found in the Center of Mexico City. The two artists decided to give new life to them with this outstanding piece. It took them 5 complete months to make. It is also extremely easy to install for it comes in separate book strands...
