A folk art style painting of a rhinoceros in a field of wildflowers basking in the moonlight, with two birds resting on the animal's back. Artist Carolyn Pennor says she wanted to emphasized the relationship of wild creatures. "I layered the canvas with modeling paste and gesso multiple times to create texture," explains Carolyn. "For harmony, I painted each area of the piece starting with a dark version of the color, then I gradually applied lighter colors."
About the Artist
Carolyn’s subjects are inspired by everyday working people. Her aesthetic straddles the line between modern and folk, utilizing warm tones and simplified forms. The subjects in Carolyn’s paintings each tell a story. “When painting my characters I feel as though I have known them,” she says. After years of working in a banking environment, Carolyn is pleased to have transitioned to a more creative lifestyle. She now shares a studio with her husband, a fellow UGallery artist, and enjoys exercising her imagination and creativity.

Artist Jaime Ellsworth captures a clever brown dog skillfully balancing a red ball and a black bird on its head. With curious gazes, the critters turn to their right as if something has piqued their interest. The two-tone backdrop of ochre and moss green sets the stage for this endearing scene.
About the Artist
Jaime Ellsworth paints animals. Her career as a cowhand never got off the ground, so she stumbled into art never knowing it would complement her passion for animals so completely. Most subjects are her own, but lately she has expanded out of her corral to include bears and beasts not commonly seen on San Juan Island, in the Pacific Northwest, where she's lived for the last 30 years. She suspects it will be years before she runs out of inspiration or has jeans that aren’t covered with paw prints or paint.
