The Collection of Charlie Watts.
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Charles Edward Stewart (fl. 1887–1938) was a gifted Scottish artist whose evocative landscapes and sporting scenes captured the character and charm of rural Britain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Glasgow, Stewart trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and later honed his technique at the renowned Académie Julian in Paris. This dual education—blending British tradition with French academic influence—shaped a confident and versatile painter.
Stewart's career spanned more than five decades, during which he became known for his finely detailed depictions of Highland life, hunting scenes, and countryside vistas. His work reveals a deep affection for the Scottish landscape: quiet lochs, weathered cottages, and windswept moorlands appear often in his compositions, rendered with a painterly sensitivity that suggests both realism and nostalgia. Alongside these, he painted energetic and dramatic hunting scenes—huntsmen galloping through the countryside, hounds in full cry—images that appealed to a growing audience of sportsmen and collectors alike.
He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy in London, the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, as well as at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. His paintings were also shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and acquired by institutions such as the Glasgow Art Galleries, reflecting his wide appeal across Britain and Ireland.
Though he spent much of his early life in Scotland, Stewart later lived in Dunning, Perthshire, and eventually settled in the village of Little Kimble in Buckinghamshire around 1920. These rural settings, rich in visual inspiration, are evident in the warmth and familiarity with which he painted rural life.
Charles Edward Stewart remained active well into the 1930s. While he may not be a household name today, his work continues to attract collectors drawn to the quiet drama of his landscapes and the lively spirit of his sporting scenes. Whether depicting a Highland loch at dusk or a foxhunt in motion, Stewart brought a steady, observant eye and a genuine affection for his subjects that still resonates with audiences today.

Born in Blofield, Norfolk, in 1843, Emms developed a deep connection to the countryside and rural life, which became the heart of his artistic inspiration.
While he painted horses and hunting scenes, it was his dog portraits that brought him enduring recognition. Emms had a remarkable ability to capture the individuality and spirit of each animal, portraying them not just as pets or working animals, but as noble and expressive beings. His brushwork was confident and lively, and he often painted dogs with a sense of pride, intelligence, and dignity.
Among the many breeds he painted, collies held a special place. Emms portrayed them with great sensitivity, often emphasizing their alert expressions, soft coats, and loyal nature. His collie paintings...
