Charles Towne (1763–1840) was a distinguished English painter renowned for his detailed and lifelike depictions of animals, particularly horses, cattle, and hunting scenes. Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he was the son of Richard Town, a portrait painter from Liverpool. Towne's artistic talent became evident early on, leading him to receive training from landscape painter John Rathbone in Leeds.
Initially, Towne worked as a coach and ornamental painter alongside his brother in Liverpool, and also spent time in Lancaster and Manchester. His transition to animal painting was influenced by his admiration for George Stubbs, whose works he studied and emulated. By the 1790s, Towne had established himself as a prominent animal painter, with a style characterized by meticulous detail and a Dutch-inspired composition. His paintings often featured animals set within expansive landscapes, blending naturalism with a romanticized portrayal of rural life.
In 1799, Towne moved to London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy and formed friendships with artists such as George Morland and Philip de Loutherbourg. During this period, he added a final 'e' to his surname, becoming known as Charles Towne. His works from this era include detailed portrayals of hunting scenes and animal portraits that captured the vitality and spirit of his subjects. Notably, he painted "Old Billy," the longest-living horse on record, who worked as a barge horse on the canals.
Towne returned to Liverpool in 1810 and became a founding member of the Liverpool Academy, serving as its vice-president from 1812 to 1813. He continued to exhibit his work there, solidifying his reputation in the region. His paintings were highly sought after by patrons in Lancashire and Cheshire, particularly for his portraits of horses, dogs, and cattle. Towne's landscapes are noted for their minute detail and careful arrangement of animals within the scenery, reflecting the influence of 17th-century Dutch masters.

Charles Towne
Charles Towne was an English painter of landscapes, horses and other animals with a particular skill for horse racing and hunting scenes. Born in Wigan, his talent for art was apparent from a young age, and he received some training from John Rathbone in Leeds. By the 1790s, Towne was an established animal painter with style reminiscent of Stubbs. He lived in London from 1799–1804, during which he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Towne's work was well regarded by his contemporaries, including Joseph Farington.

Ludolf de Jongh was the son of a shoemaker. When his father moved to Rotterdam, the young Ludolf decided to learn art rather than shoemaking and became a pupil of Cornelis Saftleven. Later he studied under Anthony Palamedes in Delft and still later with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht.
In 1635 he travelled to France with Francis Bacon. Seven years later, in 1642, he returned to the Netherlands when he heard that his mother had fallen ill. He set up a shop in Rotterdam, and his earliest signed paintings date from that year.
According to Houbraken, his travels had caused him to speak French so fluently, that his parents had to learn French in order to speak with him.

Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat.
What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention.
Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman.
Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)).
The original painting is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany.
