About the Item

With the medium of traditional oil paint, this charming piece by Chaval is exceptionally detailed and thought-provoking. Following a realist approach, yet depicting some playful imperfections, gives this piece a spiritual character, revealing itself through the use of color and forms that emerge during the creative process. Finding inspiration in what uniquely captures the artist's attention, as if it were an expression from beyond this realm, Chaval aims to express an atmosphere that first takes shape in his mind before materializing into the artwork. In this painting, we find a realist portrait of two greyhounds against a Venetian background, presented in a particular style that is very connected by his marked sense of humor, irreverent and frivolous. He hand paints the carved wood frame with artisanal passion with in the canvas with patience and giving the effect that the painting is already framed. This piece is signed by the artist lower right and on verso and it comes with hanging wire on the back ready to be displayed. Art measures 42 x 30 inches Chaval (Damian Kaliyeski) was born in 1975 in Buenos Aires. In his early art career, Chaval drew comics with an apocalyptic sense of humor while studying fine art painting. An academic training in art restoration and a constant engagement with 19th-century painting, have been fundamental pillars of his artistic practice. These experiences have not only enriched Chaval’s technical toolkit but also represent an endless source of reference and inspiration. In search of a new medium of artistic creation, he started to paint on vinyl surfaces such as cushions and punching bags, which has become an important body of his work. Since moving to New York in 1999, he has developed a series of works embodying his signature characters PIPU the Mutant butterfly, and PEPO the mutant walking pet. In April 2003, his work received the Artist Achievement Award given by Charlotta Kotik, Curator and Chair of the Department of Contemporary Art of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Chaval's work is characterized by free-spirited humor. He produced mostly comics in his early career, and after studying fine art and painting further, continued to illustrate comedy. Caricatures, objects and people with surreal elements are the cornerstone of his inspiration. Through meticulous observation, he seeks to understand the potential of its forms, aiming to interpret and predict new states of being. At times, this involves generating new possibilities and facilitating metamorphoses; at other times, it is about capturing the intrinsic beauty of a singular moment, focusing on a timeless macro perspective. PROVENANCE: Lilac Gallery Collection. Consigned by the gallery directly from Chaval Studio. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
