About the Item

Nineteenth Century Barbizon School Oil Painting of Cattle being herded through woods and drinking from a Stream. Oil on Panel, this piece is unsigned but there is no doubt it is of his hand. Constant Troyon is a "Master" Animal Painter and all his famous works are from his latter years when he found his calling painting Animals, mostly Cattle in Landscapes. His work is represented in the Louvre, The Wallace Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art In America. The Barbizon School was an art movement that advanced Realism in Art which rose against the Romantic movement of that time, it was active mainly between 1830 and 1870 and gained it's name from the village where many artists gathered at the time. Most of the work depicted farmworkers and genre scenes of village life, it's most famous exponents were Rousseau, Daubigny, Manet and of course Constant Troyon. Troyon began his career as a porcelain decorator at the factory in his home town. It was the 1830's when he took up painting and with great success both in France and Internationally. This is a really pleasing composition which leads you superbly through the painting, everything looks just right! Framed in a handmade gold leaf frame.
