About the Item

Attributed to Edwin Loder (British, fl. mid–late 19th Century) Mother Dog and Puppies in a Stable Interior Oil on canvas, unsigned English School, circa 1880 Presented in a period-style gilt frame with beaded inner moulding This tender and atmospheric stable scene, attributed to the 19th-century animal painter Edwin Loder, depicts a watchful mother dog—a muscular mastiff or English bulldog—standing guard over her lively brood of puppies. Arranged with natural ease, the young dogs tumble and play on a straw-strewn floor, exploring bones, rags, and scattered toys. A rustic backdrop of weathered timber, a watering can, and barn tools adds a sense of authenticity, grounding the composition in the quiet rhythm of rural domestic life. Executed in oil on canvas and dating to around 1880, the work displays many hallmarks of Loder’s style: a careful study of animal form, a warm palette of ochres and umbers, and a finely balanced composition that blends narrative charm with painterly realism. The dogs are rendered with anatomical conviction and expressive individuality, their fur soft and tactile beneath the filtered stable light. The adult dog stands alert yet calm—an image of maternal strength—while the pups cavort in innocence, their energy contrasting the solid, grounded poise of their mother. Though unsigned, the painting bears strong stylistic affinities with works by Edwin Loder, whose known oeuvre includes both canine and equestrian subjects. His treatment of dogs—particularly their musculature, expression, and setting—was noted for its observational detail and emotive tone, bridging the gap between genre painting and animal portraiture. An evocative and finely painted example of English Victorian animal art, this piece would suit collectors of sporting and domestic subjects alike, and brings with it the warmth and sentiment of a bygone rural England. Framed in a Vintage English hand made Frame.

English 19th century portrait of two seated King Charles Cavalier Spaniels dogs
By James Cassie
Located in Woodbury, CT
James Cassie was born at Keithhall near Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, the son of a prosperous tea and spirit merchant. Although briefly a pupil of the artist James Giles, Cassie was largely self-taught. He began his career as a painter of animals and portraits, but on moving to Aberdeen he increasingly turned his attention to local seascapes and coastal scenes, especially at dawn and sunset. He favored these outdoor scenes but continued to paint some domestic subjects and portraits throughout his life. In 1869 he moved to Edinburgh and was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy. Shortly before his death in 1879 he was elected an Academician. This piece is framed in its original frame and the painting is signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse. From the inscription on the reverse, this painting was purchased from an important house sale...

Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...
