About the Item
The Swan Dance by Einar Forseth, (1892-1988), oil on canvas. A very colorful and decorative painting by one of Swedens most influential artists of his time. Forseth had many talents and worked with many different materials. The present painting is probably painted around 1950.
He was a painter, draftsman, illustrator, designer and professor, known among other things as a monumental artist and glass painter.
Einar Forseth is perhaps best known for his Byzantine-inspired gold mosaics in the Golden Hall in Stockholm City Hall, whose walls are covered with 18.6 million colored glass and gold mosaic pieces, depicting the Queen of Mälar and allegorical figures and fantasies in a modernist style, completed in the spring of 1923.
Forseth was involved in creating and decorating several public environments in Sweden, and is also richly represented in Swedish church buildings and cinemas around the country. Forseth was also active in the art industry, where he designed both everyday and decorative objects for factory production. He gained international attention for his stained glass windows in Coventry Cathedral in the West Midlands of England in 1962.
Forset´s first training was at the General Staff Lithographic Institute in 1905–1906.
1908–1912 Forseth studied at the School of Design and Crafts and at Valand's art school in Gothenburg. Then between 1912-1915, studied at the Art Academy in Stockholm where he became interested in mosaic art and stained glass.
In the following years he exhibited portraits, landscape paintings, compositions with biblical subjects and more, in oil, watercolor or drawing. In 1916 he received a larger academy scholarship.
With the help of another scholarship from the Academy of Arts in 1919, he traveled to France, Germany, Italy, Spain and North Africa to study further.
In 1921-1922 Forseth executed his famous mosaic in the Golden Hall in Stockholm City Hall.
Forseth is particularly associated with monumental works. They are often kept in a decorative archaic and somewhat naïve style. Forseth became best known for his stained glass windows, mosaic floors, ceiling paintings and altarpieces but he was also a painter, designer, and ceramicist and created table decorations. Forseth also designed several Swedish stamps, posters and lithographs, made graphics and book illustrations for children's books and poetry collections.
Internationally, Einar Forseth exhibited in Berlin 1922, Paris 1925, London 1929, 1931, 1956 and 1962, in Trondheim 1958, the Biennale in Salzburg 1962, at the Coventry Museum 1962 and more.

Thure Vilhelm Wallner (1888–1965) was a Swedish painter and illustrator known for his meticulous depictions of Nordic wildlife and landscapes. Wallner suffered from poor health throughout his life, which led to isolation from other children. To occupy himself, he copied nature and animal studies from magazines, which later influenced his artistic direction. His first known work, a still life, was created in 1903. Over the years, he refined his technique, taking early inspiration from Bruno Liljefors, though his own style became highly detailed and realistic, with a deep focus on nature and wildlife.
