About the Item

A small, intimate 19th-century genre scene: a country lane where a boy sits astride a compact, shaggy pony while the pony drags a second animal by a short rope. The composition feels candid and humane. The boy is a child dressed in simple, sturdy rural clothes. His posture is relaxed and slightly amused; one hand holds the rope, the other steadies himself on the pony’s mane. The pony under him is small and thickset, with tousled mane and round belly, painted with short, textured brushstrokes that suggest coarse hair and compact muscle. The led pony follows with its head turned slightly toward the rider; the rope between them is taught but not taut, implying control rather than struggle. Behind the figures runs a stone fence — low, irregular, built from weathered fieldstones. The fence is rendered in warm greys and browns A hill rises beyond the fence. On that hill, three more ponies stand — small dark silhouettes that anchor the landscape and give depth to the scene. The palette is earthy and restrained: ochres, umbers, muted greens, and soft greys dominate. Highlights — the boy’s face, the pony’s flank, the sun-kissed tops of stones — are lifted with pale cream and subtle warm white. Light appears to come from the left and slightly above, a late-afternoon sun that bathes the scene in warm, lengthening shadows and softens edges. Signature and dating cues: the lower left bears a hand-painted signature reading something like “Harrington” Mood and interpretation: the scene reads as affectionate and quietly humorous — a child with animals, rural life continuing unhurried. The balance between figure study and landscape suggests the artist intended both a character piece and a small pastoral meditation on everyday country life.
