"Jane" by Frances Mabel Hollams (British 1877-1963), signed titled to the upper corner oil painting on wood panel: 14 x 17.75 inches framed 15.5 x 19 inches condition: very good and presentable; minor losses to surface decoration of frame. Some spots of surface dirt. provenance: private UK collection Frances Mabel Hollams (British 1877-1963) was a popular British painter of horses and dogs. Hollams typically painted her subjects on wooden panels with no background, so that the grain of the wood remains visible. She grew up at Dene Park in Shipbourne and later moved to Puttenden Manor near the hamlet of Dunks Green. Hollams studied under the artist Frank Calderdon (1865-1943) and, at a time when most schools did not accept female students, she studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. She was also one of the first female Royal Academicians, exhibiting eight paintings , and in 1899 was elected to the Society of Women Artists.
