About the Item

Frederick (Fred) Hall (1860-1954) In the old timbered byre Signed and dated 1937 lower right Oil on board Painting Size - 30 x 41 in Framed size 35 x 47 in Exhibited: London, Royal Academy Exhibition, 1937 Frederick Hall often known as 'Fred Hall' (and signing his work as such) was born in Stillington, Yorkshire in 1860 and studied at the Lincoln School of Art between 1883-1885, later furthering his studies in Antwerp, it was at Antwerp that he befriended Frank Bramley and William Longsdail and this was the catalyst that led him to become a member of the Newlyn School from 1883, where he practised ‘plein-air’ painting with Stanhope Forbes, Bramley and others. During the 1890s he spent less time in Newlyn, painting instead around Porlock on the Somerset coast. There he painted subjects that were more overtly social realist in content, with titles like ‘Adversity’. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1886 onward, and at the Paris Salon, winning gold there in 1912. Following his marriage in 1898 Hall moved around quite often, finally settling at Speen near Newbury, Berkshire in 1911.
