About the Item

George Cole (1810-1885) A distinguished member of the Humane Society Oil on canvas Signed and inscribed on the reverse Canvas Size 40 x 50 in Framed Size 50 x 60 in Provenance Anonymous sale; Bonhams, London, 20 March 2007, lot 12; The Collection of Charlie Watts. A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society is a famous painting by Sir Edwin Landseer, completed in 1838, The present painting by George Cole recreating the image. The painting depicts a Newfoundland dog, believed to be named Bob, lying on a stone ledge with a calm and noble expression. Bob was a real-life rescue dog associated with the Royal Humane Society, an organization dedicated to saving lives at risk of drowning. He was known for rescuing people from the River Thames, reportedly saving over 20 lives. Landseer, a master of animal portraiture, captured the dog's intelligence, dignity, and quiet heroism in this poignant work. The painting is celebrated not only for its technical brilliance but also for the way it humanizes the dog, portraying him with the same respect and grandeur typically reserved for human subjects. The soft, natural light, detailed fur texture, and peaceful yet powerful presence of Bob make the piece one of Landseer’s most beloved works. Today, A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society is housed in the Tate Britain in London, where it continues to be admired as a tribute to the bravery and loyalty of dogs.
