The Collection of Charlie Watts
Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
George Paice (1854–1925) was a British painter renowned for his finely detailed portraits of horses, dogs, carriages, and rural sporting life. Born in Pimlico, London, he trained at Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Royal Academy, developing a classical style that earned him steady commissions from the English aristocracy.
Though Paice rarely exhibited publicly—preferring to work directly with private patrons—his paintings graced the walls of country houses, hunting lodges, and officers' messes. He specialized in equestrian and canine subjects, but also became well known for his atmospheric scenes featuring horses and carriages, often depicted with precise draughtsmanship and a nostalgic charm. These works captured not only the animals but also the elegance and social ritual of the Edwardian and Victorian countryside.
Settling in Croydon after marrying in 1879, Paice painted throughout his life, producing both small-scale portraits of beloved pets and grander works depicting racehorses, hunting scenes, and coaching views. His portrayals of horses in harness—drawing fine carriages across sweeping landscapes or waiting at village inns—reflect a deep understanding of equine form and behavior, likely rooted in close observation and familiarity with country life.
Among his best-known works are Sansovino (the 1924 Derby winner), Pretty Polly, and a series of refined carriage scenes showing pairs or teams of horses in motion. His ability to convey both the strength of the animals and the elegance of their surroundings contributed to his popularity among upper-class clients.
Though Paice faced financial hardship after World War I, he continued to paint with devotion until his death in 1925. He was buried in Croydon with his racing colours draped over his coffin—a quiet tribute to a life spent capturing the grace of horses on canvas.
His works are now held in collections at the Walker Art Gallery, Leeds Art Gallery, Mount Stewart (National Trust), and even MoMA in New York. Today, George Paice is remembered as one of Britain’s leading sporting and animal painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

George Paice
George Paice (1854–1925) was an accomplished English artist celebrated for his exquisite equestrian and animal paintings. Born in Pimlico, London, Paice demonstrated an early affinity for art and attended prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts, where he honed his technical skills and refined his distinctive style. Paice specialized in painting horses, dogs, and other animals, often commissioned by wealthy patrons, landowners, and aristocrats to immortalize their prized animals on canvas. His works are characterized by their lifelike detail, elegant composition, and an ability to capture the personality and vitality of his subjects. Paice's mastery of texture and anatomy enabled him to produce vivid and emotive representations of animals, making his portraits cherished heirlooms. While his primary focus was on animals, Paice also painted rural landscapes and hunting scenes, offering glimpses into the pastoral life of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. His art was admired for its traditional aesthetic and timeless appeal, standing apart from the emerging modernist movements of his time. Paice's paintings remain highly sought after by collectors and are frequently found in country houses, galleries, and private collections. His work preserves a legacy of Britain's equestrian culture and rural heritage, continuing to resonate with audiences who appreciate classic animal portraiture.
