About the Item
Gina Matarazzo’s “A Theater for Thomas” is a charming and imaginative oil painting on Gessoboard panel created in 2024. This original, handmade piece measures 10 x 8 x 1.25 inches and is presented in a beautifully ornate gold-tone frame with overall dimensions of approximately 15 x 13 inches. It features a whimsical stage setting at night, complete with a playful chipmunk dressed in a bow tie and surrounded by lush flora and colorful fruit. The carefully rendered curtains, vibrant blossoms, and lovingly detailed fauna all combine to create a rich, storybook atmosphere—inviting viewers into a scene filled with both humor and warmth.
This painting highlights Matarazzo’s fondness for merging the animal kingdom with theatrical elements, resulting in a delightful crossover of fine art and fantasy. Executed with oil paints on Gessoboard, it reflects the artist’s meticulous attention to detail and skillful layering of color to achieve depth and vibrancy. The piece comes directly from the artist’s studio, ensuring pristine condition and authenticity. The frame’s ornate design not only enhances the painting’s visual presence but also complements its vintage-theater motif.
An excellent example of Matarazzo’s ability to craft narrative scenes, “A Theater for Thomas” would make a captivating addition to any collection, especially for those who appreciate whimsical storytelling through fine art. Its condition is brand new, and it is ready to be displayed and admired.
Artist Statement:
I design books, paint pictures, hide chocolate like a squirrel (meaning, I don't always remember where I put it), love to cook and bake, own and operate 22 hula hoops (not all at once), sometimes lose paintbrushes in my hair, get caught on doorknobs frequently, work too much (because I love it!), look for creative opportunities with EVERYTHING, love looking at academic paintings in person and spending time with my cats and husband. I love COLOR and DETAILS and SECRETS and STORIES and EVERYTHING about the creative process, especially the challenge and the hard work.
There are hidden secrets, wonders and joys of the world right under our noses every day. I enjoy creating art that celebrates the things that are often overlooked and taken for granted. When is the last time you really looked at the sky or the sprightly little rabbit in your yard? What does that dog of yours dream about? I think everyone needs to slow down and pay more attention to what's going on around them. With a little creative license, I aim to show you a magical way of looking at ordinary things.
Some history about me:
In the past, my primary focus was designing and illustrating album covers for a wide variety of recording artists across a great spectrum of music genres. My client list has included Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Glen Phillips of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Peter Tork, Woody Allen, 88.5 WXPN and Austin Music. I have also done freelance work on books, toys, and textiles for clients including Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw Hill, and Running Press Books. Currently, I design books for Bookbaby in any and every genre and style that comes across my desk.
My work has exhibited at the Canton Museum of Art; IX 8 - 10, IKON Images: The Illustration Gallery, Society of Illustrators, NY; the Franklin Institute Science Museum; Philadelphia Sketch Club and Rosenwald-Wolfe Galleries in Philadelphia, PA and in the October Shadows exhibition in Altadena, CA. Recently my artwork has been published in Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art Vol. 22 and 24 and in Infected by Art Vols. 3, 4 and 5).
I live with my illustrator husband, Matt Stewart and cats Gidget and Georgie in southern New Jersey where at certain spot between trees, you can catch a glimpse of the beautiful Philadelphia skyline in the distance.
