Harold Maka
Pop Art Contemporary Triptych Acrylic on Canvas. "Topy le Chien de Lyon".

2024

About the Item

Contemporary pop art acrylic triptych (three canvasses) of "Topy le Chien de Lyon" by French artist Harold Mak. Signed side right. A wonderfully colourful and humorous painting of 'Topy the Dog from Lyon'. A segmented blue Dachshund looks back at himself in amused confusion at his state. It is painted over three canvasses to be hung an inch apart in order to further elongate the sausage dog. Playful and fun this pop art acrylic on canvas packs a punch. A real talking point. 'Harold Mak' aka philibert is a Graffiti Artist, who lives and works in Rebouillon, a small hamlet at the gates of the 'Haut Var' in Southern France. He had two passions from a very young age: comic strips (Fred, Drilles, Moebius) and role-playing games. While working on drawing like his “masters”, he pursued his studies and obtained a DUT in mechanical engineering with specializations in robotics and computer science. However this did not fulfil his artistic needs and so he joined graphic designers' collectives ("the farting dog" and "the prod lab") in the Var and focused on illustration. A stint at the LEP “Lycée d’Enseignement Professionnels” in Fréjus as a teaching assistant made him aware of the value of passing on skills; this work in collaboration with applied art courses lasted 4 years. It was during this period that he occasionally joined the painter and sculptor Bernar Venet's as his assistant. From 2008 to 2010, he prepared paintings and worked under the direction of the artist for major international exhibitions. Now Harold Mak is a full-time graphic designer and collaborates with Crom on numerous “Chez Marcel” animation projects. It is with the latter that he now regularly participates in exhibitions and performances. In 2013 he joined the B.I.P “Plastic Intervention Brigade” created by the Bazar du Lézard, their objective: to meet the public, bring a little colour and pleasure into everyday life, share their passion. In 2014 with Tomax and Crom they founded the collective T.H.C (Tomax. Haroldmak. Crom). 3-member exhibition and live performance collective. That same year he also joined the “The Lizard Theatre”, (a theatre and street performance company) as a graphic illustrator and scenographer. Harold also works with young people with disabilities, in artistic workshops with L'ADAPT du Var (association for the social and professional integration of people with disabilities) and ADAPEI (departmental association of parents and friends of people with mental disabilities). After a meeting in 2016 with PAD, an artist metal sculptor, together they set up "les Bidon'arts" creators of recycled, transformed cans intended to enrich spaces. Harold also gives graffiti lessons at the University of Toulon.
