Artwork Details: Isabel Rock , 'Staring at the Sun' 99.7 x 70.2cm, collaged woodblock print and acrylic ink on 410gsm Somerset Satin paper, 2011 In Isabels own words; 'Staring at the Sun' The man stood on the mountain and stared at the golden sun. The sun stared back at him, its heat blazed and burnt his eyes, the birds sang a maddening tune like they were pecking at his eardrums. The man pointed his finger and shouted, ' you lied to me' at the sun. The sun laughed and said 'you wanted to believe me. I told you what you had already decided in your head to be the most convenient thing for you.' The man raged and hopped in what looked to the birds like a beautiful dance. 'Trickery, skulduggery!' he shouted. 'villain, thief, abomination!' The sun blinked and smiled calmly. It had seen a lot from humans, there was nothing that could surprise it now. Howard Tangye (b.1948, Australia) has been an influential force in fashion for decades. Lecturing at London’s Central Saint Martins for 35 years, including 16 years as head of BA Womenswear. There, he tutored many contemporary greats, including John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Christopher Kane, Wes Gordon, Zac Posen and Hussein Chalayan. Examples of Tangye’s portraits are held in many important collections, both public and private, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), Harvard University and London’s National Portrait Gallery. Throughout his teaching career Tangye quietly developed a particularly idiosyncratic art practice.
