Jacques-Laurent Agasse
An Arabian stallion in a wooded landscape

About the Item

Jacques-Laurent Agasse (1767-1849) An Arabian stallion in a wooded landscape Oil on canvas Canvas Size 12 x 14 in Framed Size 21 x 22 in Provenance Believed to have passed by descent to Martin Colnaghi (1821-1908), and by descent until sold at Christie's London in the early 1940s. With Lane Fine Art, London; Sale, Christie's, A Town House in Mayfair; 20 November 2008, lot 529; Where purchased for £27,500; The Collection of Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones Jacques-Laurent Agasse (April 24, 1767 – December 27, 1849) was a Swiss painter best known for his highly detailed and lifelike depictions of animals, particularly horses, dogs, and exotic creatures. Born in Geneva, he showed artistic talent from a young age and studied at the Calabri School of Drawing. His interest in anatomy led him to Paris, where he trained under the renowned artist Jacques-Louis David and attended dissections to better understand animal and human forms—something that later influenced his remarkable attention to detail. In 1789, Agasse returned to Geneva, where he met George Pitt (later Lord Rivers), an English aristocrat and passionate animal lover. Lord Rivers became his patron and encouraged him to move to England, where there was a strong market for equestrian and sporting art. By 1800, Agasse had settled in London, quickly establishing himself as a leading painter of animals and hunting scenes. His work was praised for its accuracy, realism, and ability to capture the spirit and movement of his subjects. Some of his most famous paintings include White Horse in Pasture, Two Hunters with a Groom, and Giraffes with Impala in a Landscape. His ability to paint exotic animals so precisely was especially admired, and he became a sought-after artist among the British upper class. However, despite his talent and recognition, Agasse struggled financially for much of his life and lived modestly. He continued painting until his death in London in 1849. Today, his works are held in major collections, including the Tate Gallery and the Yale Center for British Art, and he is remembered as one of the finest animal painters of his time.
