Jenny Day lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico and is represented by Ferrara Showman Gallery. "Nocturne" exemplifies Jenny Day's signature portrayal of surreal perspectives on life, memory, and culture. "Nocturne" is featured in Jenny Day's 2024 solo exhibition at Ferrara Showman Gallery.   The artist says of her work…   I walked in the Mohave desert.  Listened to the bees as they hummed and sucked from yellow creosote flowers.  I watched the desert blur by as I drove eighty-miles per hour on I-40.  I couldn’t hear the bees.  The Mohave backdropped a science-fiction film I watched from my couch, the familiar recast as alien.  I dreamt the desert, distorted, California pushed up against Florida, the swamp pouring in.  I pulled up photos on my phone.  Digital, long strings of binary, framed and backlit on the little screen, compiled with other places.   Which Mohave am I remembering?   The paintings acknowledge a distancing.  The built environment as landscape, the landscape as construct, the whole of the construct shattered by a fragmentation.  A scattering of attention.  The ruins of human intentions sunlit and wholly glorious in their decay.  Abandoned or half-abandoned and remembered and recorded and replicated and distorted each step of the way.   The body of work skips like the dream.  Fairbanks, Alaska blurs into California Superfund sites.  Historical buildings I’ve walked through mate with Instagram photos.  Hybridized places emerge, white space mimics the frames of our tiny machines.  Pencil marks left in, masking tape, signal the painting as object, mediated, layers away from representation.   The paintings are created in longing, possibly mourning.  Imagining an innocence of vision that might never have existed, rejecting it, recognizing the impossibility of an unaltered connection to place.  The places are there still.   Anxiety followed me. The escapist reflects and distorts its shadow world, the real, a funhouse mirror that names the traumas as it blows past them, slyly referential. The work suggests that magic is possible; while anchoring itself in the grotesque, inedible foods, a conglomeration of garbage. A blissful, almost psychedelic, reverence for nature exists, but the fantasy’s origins leach through in the details and distortions. The animals are often translucent, reflective. Nature persists, proliferates, and transforms. Relentless flowers push up against the edges of paintings, attempting to smother and subsume, animals and people oblivious to any threat; the threat always present.

Night Flight, Abstract Painting
By Janine Etherington
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
After a flight back and forth across the country, Janine's exploration in her studio started with a playful mixing of colors directly on the canvas. A shape emerged in that process that she chose to repeat and then incorporate with a series of glazes. Stepping back and looking at the result, the image reminded her of those hours spent moving through the clouds to finally find herself back home.

About the Artist
Janine’s abstract artworks are created with measured doses of both intuition and analysis. “My work develops as a series of calls and responses,” she says. She adds color, letting gravity pull the paint around. She then responds to the direction of the composition with additional marks, adding and subtracting. The incorporation of recognizable forms, specifically letters and numbers, indicates the influences of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg on Janine’s work. Janine is also inspired by listening to jazz music. She is a musician herself, and plays in a local Zimbabwean marimba ensemble when she’s not painting.
