About the Item

John Peter Russell was a pioneering Australian impressionist, born in Sydney in 1858. After studying engineering in England, he turned to art and trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he became part of a vibrant circle of avant-garde artists. Russell befriended and painted alongside Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, and Henri Matisse—in fact, he is credited with introducing Matisse to the principles of impressionist color. Settling on the island of Belle-Île, off the coast of Brittany, Russell produced luminous seascapes, portraits, and natural studies that reflected his passion for color, light, and atmosphere. Although he destroyed many of his works following the death of his wife in 1907, his surviving paintings reveal a confident, vibrant impressionist style that anticipates modernism. Despite being largely overlooked during his lifetime, Russell is now recognized as a key figure in both Australian and international impressionism. This evocative impressionist painting captures a lively riverside moment, where salmon leap and swim in shallow, moving water beneath a canopy of luminous foliage. The work is rich with texture and movement, with short, broken brushstrokes and dabs of pure color that shimmer across the surface of the board. In typical Russell fashion, the palette is bold and light-filled: silvery blues and turquoise tones play across the water, while the pink-orange bodies of the salmon add vibrant contrast. Reflections ripple in fragmented patterns, and sunlight filters through green leaves onto the river’s surface. Though loosely rendered, the composition retains clarity—the arcs of the salmon are dynamic, the riverbank dappled with shifting light. The sense of immediacy and fluidity suggests a plein air approach, painted quickly to seize a fleeting moment in nature. This piece stands as a fine example of Russell’s ability to combine observational detail with impressionist spontaneity, celebrating nature’s color, movement, and vitality.
