Introducing John Kenney: Celebrated Sporting Artist of the 20th Century
Discover the captivating artistry of John Kenney, a name synonymous with the dynamic world of sports illustration. While his name may be less familiar, his work has left an indelible mark, especially among generations of children who grew up enchanted by his illustrations in Ladybird books.
Born in Leicestershire in 1911, Kenney's roots ran deep in this vibrant region. He honed his craft at the City Boys’ School and later pursued formal art education at the esteemed Leicester College of Art. His journey into the world of art commenced at J.E. Slater, a commercial art firm.
During World War II, Kenney bravely served in the 44th Searchlight Regiment and later with the 21st Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. Amidst the tumult of war, he sketched vivid scenes of the historic D-Day landings and the Allies' triumphant advance across Europe. Many of these priceless sketches are now preserved in the annals of the Royal Army Museum at Woolwich.
In 1952, he bid farewell to his career as a commercial artist, embarking on a new chapter devoted to his lifelong love: horses and the exhilarating sports associated with them. Immerse yourself in his equestrian world, where he became an integral figure in the local hunting scene. Countless days were spent in the company of the Fernie and Quorn hunts, painting and riding with boundless passion.
Kenney's artistic vision was profoundly shaped by the legacy of Sir Alfred Munnings, and he, in turn, left an enduring mark on subsequent British sporting artists, notably influencing talents like Neil Cawthorne.
In the pinnacle year of 1972, marking his passing, Kenney's legacy reached international heights. His extraordinary body of work graced the walls of Abercrombie and Fitch, captivating audiences in both New York and Chicago.
Embark on a journey through the masterful strokes of John Kenney, where the spirit of sportsmanship and the timeless elegance of equestrian pursuits come alive in vivid detail. Experience the legacy of an artist whose name may be eclipsed by his art, but whose impact endures through the ages.
