Charming oil on canvas painting by the renowned Spanish artist José Moncada Calvache, depicting a tender and bucolic scene of chicks gathered around a wicker basket draped with colorful fabrics. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner, the painting is beautifully framed in an ornately carved and gilded classical frame, enhancing its decorative and collectible appeal..
José Moncada Calvache was born in Almería in 1893. From an early age, he showed a strong passion for drawing and painting, which he pursued alongside work in his family’s carpentry workshop. In 1908, he began studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Almería, later earning gold medals during his academic years at the city’s Academy of Fine Arts.
In 1911, he was awarded a Gold Medal at the National Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Madrid. With the support of English consul Pablo Cazard, Moncada moved to Madrid in 1918 to further his studies, exhibiting at prestigious venues such as the Ateneo de Madrid (1921) and the Salón de Arte Moderno (1924).
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he actively exhibited in Madrid, Almería, and Alhama, participating in major events including the 1929 Seville Ibero-American Exhibition. After the Spanish Civil War, he settled in Barcelona, where his works gained wide acclaim. In 1940, he took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts alongside artists like Solana and Vázquez Díaz, receiving Third Prize.
Moncada’s works were consistently supported by prestigious Barcelona galleries such as Prats Fatjó and Pallarés, until his return to Alhama in 1955. His later years, particularly the 1970s and 1980s, were marked by prolific artistic output and numerous honors, including being named Honorary Citizen of both Almería and Alhama.
He passed away on July 5, 1988, at the age of 95, and was laid to rest in the cemetery of Alhama de Almería, the place he chose to close the chapter of his life.

“Hen and Chicks” '1867' Antique Oil Painting by Andrea Cherubini, Italian

An exquisite interior scene depicting a mother hen as she roosts while her chicks peck about the room, four feeding on the grain in a simple white porcelain plate while several gather to drink from a pottery vessel filled with water. The interior suggests the location is perhaps the storeroom or root cellar with a shelf stacked with garlic and a covered vessel hanging on the wall over the hen. The work is signed in the lower left corner "A Cherubini 1867, Roma" and the reverse retains labels from the gallery of Schillay Fine Art, Inc. in New York and subsequently an inventory label for Faultless Starch Bonami Company. The work has been professionally conserved and remains in pristine condition. Born in Rome in 1833, Andrea Cherubini was primarily a landscape and seascape painter, preferring to capture views of Southern Italy. A typical example would include Drawing in the nets, Sorrento offered at Christies, London in January of 2013, ultimately achieving 4375 GBP. The Benezit notes a few of his scenes as particularly interesting, including Seascape (1883), Eight Views of Capri and Views of the Island of Ischia and Surroundings.
