About the Item
The summer may be winding down but your love of the sea never seems to. Birds of a feather also extends to those strong willed, hearty beach friends, the seagulls! They keep us company through thick or thin! Realist painter Joseph Sundwall has created a portrait of a cluster of seagulls sunning themselves, perhaps waiting for the next batch of mussels to wash up to shore for a sumptuous dinner treat. Sundwall is both an accomplished realist and figurative portrait painter with both skills exquisitely on display in this timeless marine landscape. Joseph Sundwall grew up in Chicago where his artistic talents were recognized early on. He studied his trade at the Kansas City Art Institute, the famed Art Students League and National Academy of Design in NYC followed by added training in London at the St. Oswald Studios. His instructors included such luminaries as Everett Kinstler and David Leffel. While always seeking minimalism in his compositions, Sundwall's ability to combine styles and techniques with varied subject matter is quite exceptional. To significant acclaim, Sundwall original oil paintings are in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Sundwall has framed this piece in a slightly distressed and burnished frame which compliments the jetty rocks; the framed size is 38x38.

View AllBaitfish, original 34x34 figurative marine landscape
Located in Spring Lake, NJ
She grew up summering at the beach, hanging around with the seagulls as her parents watched her from underneath their striped beach umbrella, not far back in the sand from the lifeguard's chair. A budding student of the ocean, she does not hesitate to challenge the seagulls as they dive into the surf for their next meal . . . the baitfish! Her feet are solidly planted in the ocean floor as the undertow grabs her and the baitfish with each wave, in this original, figurative, marine landscape. The turquoise and kelly green waters are radiant as the white tide plays off of the seagulls. Adding to that is the tension and excitement created by the bright, midday light, touches of impressionist's impasto paint application and abstractions of sections of the tide. Landscape painting of seagulls fishing in the sea by Henrietta Caledon.
There is a family of seagulls that live on my roof, and I became fascinated by them during the lockdown. They are so agile, and they represent ‘soaring above the drama’, ‘looking at things from a different angle’, adaptability, stamina, resourcefulness, and freedom.
The turquoise and blue colours of the sea almost swallow the gulls in the waves and their orange beaks are a wonderful contrast.
Henrietta Caledon was born in London in 1964. Studied art and history of art for O’level and A’level at West Heath School and then Queensgate School. Trained at Xium International design service company in 1982/83. Started interior decorating business Henrietta Designs in 1984 and have carried out many projects around the world for thirty five years, working a lot with design and colour. 2016-2019, Trained with Nick Bashall at Rossetti Studios and the sketch club at Dilke Street. 2018 exhibited three paintings in group exhibition at The Hurlingham Club, London. 2019 solo exhibition at Kiki McDonough...
