About the Item

Jules-Bertrand GELIBERT Bagnères-de-Bigorre (Hautes Pyrénées), 1834 – Capbreton (Landes), 1916 Oil on panel Signed lower right “Jules-Brd Gélibert” 32 x 40.5 cm (41 x 49 cm with frame ) Excellent condition Jules-Bertrand Gélibert was registered at the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He first studied with his father Paul and the sculptor Bernard Griffoul-Dorval. His first exhibited sculpture was already a portrait of a dog ("Druid", a dog of the Prince Imperial, in 1860). But Jules Bertrand Gélibert is above all well known today as a painter of hunting scenes and hunting dogs. His workshop was in Montmartre in Paris, 17 boulevard Pigalle. In 1861, he was given an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1865 he lived in Clamart and studied with Louis-Godefroy Janin, the great painter specializing in dogs. We know that he also painted with his brother and when Jules was painting animals, Gaston was painting landscapes. Among his famous hunting pictures, in 1875 a "Hallali of deer in the ponds of Belle Croix" in the forest of Fontainebleau is noticed. Critics admired "the vigor of design and color, of movement and keenness of observation." At the Universal Exhibition of 1889 and that of 1900, he was given bronze medals. A great lover of hound hunting, he followed several hunts, the Rallye Sivry in Fontainebleau and the Bois Boudran team with Count Greffulhe as well as the hunts of the Baron de Lassus. On the initiative of the Société Centrale Canine chaired by the Prince of Wagram, the Salon of hunting and Hunting Painters and Sculptors was founded in 1890, chaired by Jules-Bertrand Gélibert himself. It was held from 1890 to 1912 in the Orangery of the Jardin des Tuileries. The paintings of Jules-Bertrand Gélibert are today in many museums (in New York, London, Paris, Bagnères, Cambrai, Saint-Etienne and Tarbes) and can also be found in many castles in France (at the Murat, Wagram, Carayon-Latour, etc.). Georges Paul MASURE (Active 1900s/1910s) Oil on canvas 80 x 65 cm (97 x 82cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower right "G. P. Masure / 1912" Painting exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 (2032. « Fleurs et japoneries ») Beautiful 19th century frame Georges Paul Masure was a Parisian painter in the Montparnasse area. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in the years 1900/1910. Our painting is the painting he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 under the number 2032 and titled "Flowers and Japaneries". It represents a still life with a bunch of flowers, a magnificent basket of oranges, a pomegranate and a Japanese sculpture with a little fisherman with a red Koi carp. 2500 years ago, when the son of Confucius was born, he received as a gift from King Shoko of Ro, a fish that was first called Koi. It represents the symbol of strength, because this fish was the only one able to go up the steam of the Yellow River. Owning a koi will long remain the prerogative of the Japanese nobility. The dominant colors in the painting are orange and red. And in Japanese Shinto...
