Julien Dupré
'Bretonne Cowherd in Pasture', Barbizon, Proto-Impressionism, Paris, Brittany

Circa 1880

About the Item

A cabinet-size, grisaille oil on panel landscape showing a young Bretonne cowherd attempting to direct a reluctant Guernsey cow, which appears determined on a different direction. Unsigned and with label verso bearing artist's name and dates. Displayed in a burl walnut frame. Framed dimensions: 10 x .75 x 14.25 Inches This work is a fully realized study for the foreground compositional element in Dupré's 1882 oil painting, "In Pasture", held in the permanent collection of the Kemper Art Museum, Washington University, St. Louis, (see photo, above). In 1886, this large work was purchased by member subscription for the museum's permanent collection. Julien Dupré first exhibited at the 1876 Paris Salon and, thereafter, almost continuously until his death in 1910. Over the course of a long and distinguished career, he was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards including a gold medal at the Paris Fair of 1889. In 1992, he was invested as a companion of the Legion of Honor for his services to art. Julien Dupré was one of the leading exponents of the second generation of Realist painters. This group included Barbizon artists and, also, more committed realists such as Leon Lhermitte and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Like the earlier generation of Realists that included Jean-Francois Millet and Jules Breton, these artists focused on the artistic elevation of French rural life and the labors of the rural peasantry that sustained it. As Hollister Sturges, the former chief curator of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, has observed, "...Salon critics rightly perceived Julien Dupré as Breton's closest follower. Through idealization of form, he invested his peasant women with a heroic aura, though unlike his predecessor, his figures are usually engaged in vigorous action. His landscapes, with their cloudy skies and varied motifs, are also much more active. Their high key color and spontaneous brushwork have a vivacity and freshness that distinguishes them from the sober calm of Breton's scenes. Dupré's most enduring and powerful image is that of a single, Herculean, female, positioned dramatically and elegantly in the foreground of the painting, pitching hay. His finely modeled figures pay tribute to his academic training, as well as his study of the works of Breton and Bouguereau; while his freer handling of the background areas, at times done with a palette knife, shows the influence of the Impressionists." (Jules Breton and the French Rural Tradition"; Joslyn Art Museum, 1982.) Julien Dupre's work is held in the permanent collection of numerous public museums including: Washington University Art Gallery, St. Louis, "In Pasture" (1882) Washington University Art Gallery, St. Louis, "Haying Scene" (1882) St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis, "Haying Scene" (1884) Worcester Art Museum, Worcester, "The Haymakers" (1886) Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, "Haymaking" (1892) Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, "Young Woman Watering Cattle" Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, "Return From the Fields" (n.d.) Cape Maneuver bullfighter oil painting

Title: Cape Maneuver Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986) Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in (50 x 60 cm) Date: Circa 1980s Signature: Signed "Tuser" in the lower left corner Condition: Excellent; thick, vibrant brushwork and vivid colors well preserved. 📝 Description This painting captures a dramatic moment in the bullfight — the classic verónica — as the matador gracefully halts the bull’s charge with a sweeping motion of the cape. The vivid contrast of magentas, blues, and golds intensifies the theatrical tension between man and beast. The composition is dynamic yet controlled, emphasizing the poise of the torero against the raw force of the bull. The expressive brushstrokes and thick impasto enhance the sense of movement, while the abstracted background ensures focus remains on the central figures. The piece is a striking blend of figuration and emotional energy, characteristic of Tuser’s taurine works. 👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919. He studied at the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts and began exhibiting in the 1940s. By 1947, he had fully devoted his career to bullfighting scenes, developing a distinctive figurative expressionist style with impressionist influences. He collaborated with the magazine El Ruedo, creating numerous illustrations and covers, and designed collectible postcards for Editorial Artigas. His work became well-known in Spanish artistic circles and is now part of both private and institutional collections, including the Club Taurino of London. His paintings have been auctioned internationally, reaching up to $3,000 depending on size and subject. His legacy is that of a painter who masterfully captured the emotion, tradition, and drama of the Spanish corrida. 🎨 Similar Artists José María Tuser Vázquez’s work shares thematic and stylistic elements with: Roberto Domingo – A pioneer of bullfighting art...

Oil measures 30x30 cm. Frame measures 52x52 cm. He was born in 1951. Under the direction of the teacher Pedro Bermejo, he began his artistic career, quickly standing out and observing in his works an unusual mastery of drawing. A highly mature painter who has known how to stop time in all his works. His themes are preferably costumbrist, although in his work it is usual to see 18th century themes, with horse carriages, hats, umbrellas and still lifes. Observing his work reminds us, due to the theme, of Maestro Palmero...

Four Bedouin ride camels alongside a flurry of goats, carrying lambs and hens in saddlebags. Other figures clothed in Middle Eastern garments walk with them, and the busy scene fades into a dusty, evening landscape. The colour palette is vibrant and hued with dusky pinks and oranges, giving the impression that these Bedouin are returning back to camp. The cropped composition also gives a dynamic feel to the picture: a glance into early 20th Century desert life. The present painting was created by Spanish artist José Benito Ortega...
